Logan, UT, April 22, 2021 – EVTOL Online (EVTOL is an abbreviation for “electric vertical take-off and landing”) featured insights from the Electric Power Systems (EPS) team in its article, “Joby touts a 10,000 flight cycle eVTOL battery. Can it deliver?”
The online publication highlights electric aircraft company Joby Aviation’s claim “to get at least 10,000 flight cycles out of the lithium-ion batteries in its eVTOL air taxis” from Joby’s IPO Edge Webinar that occurred on April 15, 2021.
“Batteries are capable of over 10,000 cycles under certain conditions,” EPS told eVTOL Online. “But this is only one data point that does not present a complete picture of the problem…”
“EPS collaborated with NASA to collect data and model the life of an aviation propulsion battery. We found that exposure to shock, vibration, and especially high temperature can have far more impact on battery life than cycling. Aircraft usage spectrums vary, among other things, in range and speeds flown.”
